Does Wisconsin require every carpenter to hold a state contractor credential?

No. Wisconsin's contractor credentials apply to specific construction businesses and activities, including credentials connected with permits for one- and two-family dwellings. An employee carpenter does not automatically need to hold the same credential as the contracting business.

What should an employer verify for a residential carpenter contractor?

Employers should verify the business's applicable Dwelling Contractor credential, the required Dwelling Contractor Qualifier, insurance, permits, and the scope of work covered by the contractor's credentials.

Does Wisconsin require workers' compensation for a small carpentry company?

Workers' compensation requirements depend on the employer's workforce and payroll. Coverage generally applies once an employer has three employees or reaches $500 in quarterly wages for one or more employees, subject to Wisconsin's statutory rules.

Are Wisconsin carpenter apprentices paid during training?

Yes. Wisconsin's registered carpenter apprenticeship includes paid related instruction, and apprentices receive regular hourly wages during that paid classroom instruction as well as their on-the-job employment.

Does Wisconsin have a statewide carpenter apprenticeship?

Yes. Wisconsin DWD recognizes carpenter as a registered construction apprenticeship occupation, with local apprenticeship committees sponsoring construction apprenticeships across different geographic areas of the state.

You're ready when

You can safely set up your work area, measure and mark accurately, follow instructions without repeated correction, and complete basic tasks without constant supervision.

What you need to hold

Extensive field experience across framing, installation, repair, and finish work.Strong plan reading, layout, estimating, and problem solving ability.Proven crew leadership and jobsite communication.Appropriate contractor or lead related credentials when your role requires them.

You're ready when

You can organize a scope from plans through completion, keep a crew productive, catch problems before they become expensive, and communicate clearly with the contractor and other trades.
